Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 22, 2026
This policy explains what the BCN career app collects about you, why, who sees it, and how to control it. It follows Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
Who we are and how to reach us
The app is run by Black Catalyst Network Inc. ("BCN", "we"). Our Privacy Officer answers every privacy question and request:
Privacy Officer, Black Catalyst Network Inc.

What we collect
- Account details: your name, email, city and country, and your password. We store the password only in a scrambled (hashed) form, so nobody at BCN can read it.
- Career information: your journey stage, the sectors you're interested in, your resume or the answers you type in, your skills, years of experience, current and target job titles, and your highest credential.
- Your results: the job matches, scores, gaps and next steps the app works out for you.
- Your directory profile (optional): your headline, bio, LinkedIn link, whether you're open to referrals, and the connection messages you send and receive.
- Talent Pool answers (optional): your province, job type, work setup, whether you'd relocate and where, your start date, a yes or no on whether you can work in Canada, and your yes or no to each introduction we ask you about.
- Newsletter consent (optional): if you ask for the newsletter, a record of your email, when you agreed, the exact wording you agreed to and where you agreed.
- Security information: when you sign in, and your IP address, which we use for a short time to block repeated failed sign-in and password-reset attempts.
What we don't collect
We never ask for your immigration status, your permit type, document numbers (such as passport or permit numbers) or your Social Insurance Number (SIN). Please don't put them in your resume or answers.
How we use it
- To produce your career report and, if you ask, email you a copy.
- To show your directory profile to other members, only if you turn it on.
- To match you to roles and arrange introductions, only if you join the Talent Pool.
- To send account emails: password resets, introduction requests and the Talent Pool check-in every 90 days.
- To send the newsletter, only if you choose to receive it. We keep a record of your consent, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
We don't use your information for anything else without asking you first.
Who we share it with
- We never sell your data.
- Employers see your profile only through BCN Talent, and only after you say yes to that specific role. We ask you about each role separately, and each request expires after 7 days if you don't answer.
- Other members see only what you put in your directory profile, and only if you turn it on.
- Share links: if you make a share link for your results, anyone with the link sees your first name and your top matches with their scores. Nothing else. You can turn the link off at any time.
- Service providers that run the app for us:
- DigitalOcean hosts the app and its data in Toronto, Canada.
- Zoho ZeptoMail sends our emails from its Canada region.
- Google Fonts and the Tailwind CSS service provide the app's fonts and styling. When a page loads, they receive your IP address and browser type.
- When the law requires it, for example a court order.
Where it's stored
Your information is stored in Canada.
How long we keep it
- Resume files are deleted after 6 months without any activity on your account. The skills we found in them stay, so your results keep working.
- Everything else stays until you delete your account.
- When you delete your account, we remove your information straight away. Copies in our backups are gone within 5 weeks.
- Payment records are kept as tax law requires, but they're unlinked from you, so they no longer show who paid.
- If you leave the Talent Pool, we keep a record of when you joined and when you left, as proof of your consent.
Your rights
- See and correct your details on your profile page, or email the Privacy Officer for a copy of all the data we hold about you.
- Download your resume from your profile page.
- Leave the community directory, the Talent Pool or the newsletter at any time.
- Delete your account at any time from your profile page.
- Complain to our Privacy Officer. If you're not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (oipc.ab.ca (opens in new tab)).
How we protect it
The app uses HTTPS on every page. Passwords are stored only in hashed form. Resumes are never put at a public web address; only you can download yours. Only the few BCN staff who need it can access member data.
If a breach could cause you significant harm, we'll tell you and the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta.
Age
The app is for adults aged 18 and over. Everyone confirms their age when they sign up. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, and if we learn we have, we delete it.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy, we update the date at the top. Before any important change, we'll tell members by email or in the app.
